with sidewalk chalk.
and neighbors.
no sign of uniforms or combat boots.
just a grill and beer and good company.
no where to go. nothing to do.
just normal.
the sun was bright.
our colors brighter.
we colored the ground.
chased our children.
the guys threw a football.
a dad tackled his boys.
we all laughed.
this summer is
makin’ memories, big enough to fill two summers.
because next summer, they won’t be here.
because next summer, we’ll be dreaming dreams…
dreams of normal days,
and peace on earth.
